The Best Use of 1 Hour!

In these time starved days when everything is required yesterday and life seems to be constantly being put off until tomorrow, I am often asked, “What’s the best use of 1 hour?” and, until recently, my answer was always the one favoured by politicians, namely, “It depends on the circumstances.”

For example, if you have a goal so big that the rest of your life is on-hold until it is done, then the best use of that hour is to dedicate it to your No.1 Goal. However, if that single hour will not be enough to make a meaningful contribution to your main goals then pulling out your list of administrative tasks like follow up phone calls, quick-fire emails and bill payments would be a great idea. Of course, this suggestion does presume you’ve made a list in the first place so that you are not wasting time trying to remember everything that needs to be done.

However, I am not going to suggest any of those things right now. More and more of my clients are finding themselves working many more than the 8 hours a day that their parents worked or that they thought would be required when they started out on their careers. Due to the introduction of mobile digital communication they feel as if they are constantly working and find themselves checking their emails at 10pm at night – and this after 12 hours in the office or stuck in traffic! Weekends whiz by and when they do manage to take a holiday it takes them at least three days to unwind and start to enjoy it. Who negotiated that deal? No wonder the next generation (just like every one before it) is looking at the situation and deciding it is just not for them! Maybe the current youth fixation with celebrity and wealth is not just to do with the luxury lifestyle? Maybe the attraction stems also from the fact that many celebrities also appear to have a life?

So, what’s my suggested Best Use of 1 Hour? Take a break. Kick your shoes off, put your feet up, put your favourite music on, read your favourite book, do some gardening, go to the gym, take a swim, plan a holiday, call that friend who’s been on your mind for a week, take a nap or perhaps just sit in silence, listen to the birds and remind yourself why you are here, what and who you appreciate most in life and just be thankful.

While you’r taking a break, why not watch our free video series?  “The PPS Method – how to overcome the barriers to success in business and in life.”
